January 21, 2005 | McDowell Mountains, Maricopa County, Arizona
One of the largest granite-boulders entrained by the Marcus Landslide approximately 500,000 years ago. Affectionately called “Clubhouse Rock” by visiting students, this boulder was transported up to 1 km before resting at the toe of the landslide. Since then the boulder split along fractures, with one part of the boulder having slid down to the right in the photo. Exposed underneath the boulder is the contact between the landslide and the surface it slid onto nearly 500,000 years ago! (Dog for scale) | Photo by Brian F. Gootee
