12/2010 | North of the Sulphur Hills, Cochise County, AZ | A freshly collapsed earth fissure is flanked by numerous tension cracks north of the Sulphur Hills in Cochise County, AZ. This fissure, as well as several others in the vicinity collapsed following heavy monsoon rainfall in late July, 2010. The total length of newly opened fissures in this area exceeds 1.3 miles. The cause of earth fissures is subsidence due to overpumping of groundwater. (Photo by Joe Cook)
