Sept. 19, 2012 | Grand Canyon | Coconino County, Arizona
Near Colorado River Mile 187 in the western Grand Canyon are a series of lava cascades that spectacularly spill from the rim of the canyon to the river channel. These flows are about 300,000 years old and must have made for a wondrous sight as red hot lava flowed down the walls of the canyon toward the Ice Age Colorado. (Photo and caption by Wayne Ranney)
