Triassic, Jurassic, sedimentary rock, red beds

April 23, 2011 | Vermilion Cliffs | Coconino County, Arizona

In the far north of Arizona at the head of the Grand Canyon lies the Vermilion Cliffs, containing colorful strata of Triassic and Jurassic age. Note the Lees Ferry campground in the lower right. This area received heavy amounts of monsoon rainfall in a event that occurred on September 11, 2013. This event washed large boulders from the cliffs downstream into the Colorado River.
