Arizona STATEMAP program: Current status

The National Geologic Mapping Act of 1992 established the STATEMAP program to expedite production of geologic maps for the Nation. STATEMAP is a matching fund program administered by the U.S. Geological Survey that is available only to State geological surveys. Federal funds awarded to States must be matched by an equal or greater amount of State funds for each project year. Through this program, the Arizona Geological Survey has received $3,449,894 in Federal funds and contributed slightly more from State funds for geologic mapping in Arizona over the past 20 years. More than 150 geologic maps, mostly at 1:24,000, have been produced with STATEMAP funds (Figure 1).

STATEMAP 2012STATEMAP mapping priorities are determined by the Arizona Geological Survey with advice from the Geologic Mapping Advisory Committee (GMAC). The GMAC is a diverse group of government and private sector specialists with knowledge of current issues in Arizona where human welfare and economic activity are affected by geology. The most recent GMAC meeting, in September 2012, resulted in recommendations for mapping in four areas of Arizona (Figure 1), all of which were proposed for new mapping in the STATEMAP proposal submitted in November, 2012. These areas are as follows: (1) The Tucson – Casa Grande segment of the Phoenix-Tucson metropolitan corridor is an area with high potential for future population growth and development. This area was proposed for new mapping and database compilation of sedimentary deposits and rock units that are potential aggregate resources. This project is a response to recently enacted Arizona legislation that requires local governments to use geologic maps in planning and zoning so that aggregate resources remain accessible. (2) State Highway 93 in northwestern Arizona is the primary highway between Phoenix and Las Vegas. Because of traffic congestion, this highway may be re-routed on the west side of the city of Kingman. Several alternate routes are under study by the Arizona Department of Transportation, which has indicated that new geologic mapping from the Arizona Geological Survey would be helpful in evaluating alternate routes. (3) Major potash resources in eastern Arizona near Holbrook have not been exploited (Rauzi, 2008, AZGS OFR-08-07), but high potash prices have led to an extensive drilling program and active planning for new mines. Proposed geologic mapping in this area would be directed at identifying environmental geology issues that could influence mine-site selection and design. (4) The lower Colorado River Valley was abruptly inundated approximately 5 million years ago, resulting in deposition of the Bouse Formation. This was followed by progradation of deltaic sediments from northern sources and development of the modern Colorado River. Population growth along the river has been extensive. Proposed mapping is intended to identify and map aquifer units and sand and gravel resources associated with the early Colorado River. Areas of copper and gold mineralization, and areas with potential for alluvial-fan flooding, are also within the proposed map areas.

STATEMAP mapping for the current year (2012-2013) will lead to the following maps (map locations are shown in Figure 1):
