Manganese deposits, Artillery Mountains

Manganese oxides were mined and stockpiled during the 1950s. This stockpile still remains at the mine site. Manganese, a strategic and critical mineral used to produce steel, was purchased by the federal government during the Korean War because of concerns about disruptions to manganese imports.
